The Crypto Valley in Zug: the Swiss ecosystem
“Crypto Valley” refers to the Swiss ecosystem — centred on the Canton of Zug and reaching out to Zurich and the rest of the country — that has become an international benchmark for blockchain and crypto projects in recent years. It is not a delimited physical place, but a set of conditions: legal certainty, an established supervisory practice, specialised expertise and a concentration of companies in the sector. Understanding why it emerged and what it offers helps you decide whether and how to base a project there.
Why it emerged in Zug
Zug did not become a crypto hub by chance. The canton combines a number of factors that carry real weight for anyone structuring a project: competitive taxation, a pragmatic and responsive administration, and a tradition of openness towards international companies. To this was added, at federal level, a practice of clear supervision: the Swiss authority published token classification criteria relatively early, giving operators a framework within which to move. The combination of legal certainty and a constructive attitude attracted projects that found only uncertainty elsewhere.
What the ecosystem offers
The value of the Crypto Valley does not lie in a single advantage, but in the density of expertise and services concentrated there:
- A consolidated regulatory framework, with known criteria for the classification of tokens and for the treatment of different activities.
- Specialised expertise in legal, tax, accounting and technical matters, honed on real cases.
- A network of operators: issuers, infrastructure providers, authorised financial service providers.
- Access to authorised partners for activities that require a licence.
- An international reputation that eases relationships with investors, banks and counterparties.
Legal certainty, not deregulation
One misconception worth clearing up: Switzerland is not a “rule-free” environment. On the contrary, its appeal rests precisely on the clarity of the rules. Serious projects choose Zug because they know in advance how they will be classified, what obligations they will have and whom to turn to. Activities subject to authorisation — certain issuances, custody on behalf of third parties, financial intermediation — remain regulated and require the prescribed conditions. Legal certainty is a competitive advantage, not a regulatory vacuum.
What it really takes to establish yourself
Opening a structure in the Crypto Valley does not end with the choice of location. It calls for consistent decisions on several fronts:
- The legal form and the structure of the entity (often a GmbH or an AG, depending on the project).
- The classification of the token or activity, which determines the applicable obligations.
- The accounting and tax setup, to be designed from the very first financial year.
- Oversight of anti-money laundering obligations, where relevant.
- Identifying the authorised partners for activities that require a licence.
A registered office in Zug does not, on its own, produce the benefits of the ecosystem: those come from a structure set up consistently with the substance of the project.
An ecosystem, not a shortcut
The Crypto Valley works for projects that enter it in earnest: real economic substance, orderly documentation, consistency between the whitepaper, the articles of association and operational reality. It is not a shortcut for sidestepping rules — and that is precisely what has built its reputation. Those seeking only a geographical label rarely draw value from it; those who build a solid structure there benefit from a context that is hard to replicate elsewhere.
