VAT in Switzerland: thresholds, rates and liability

SIH ONE — Desk Fiscale · 10 May 2026

Swiss VAT (IVA in Italian, MWST in German) is a consumption tax that falls on the final consumer but is collected and paid over by businesses. Anyone opening a business in Switzerland immediately runs into two numbers: the liability threshold and the rate. Here we put them in order.

The liability threshold: CHF 100,000

The basic rule is simple. You are required to register for VAT when your annual turnover reaches or exceeds CHF 100,000 in taxable supplies made in Switzerland. Below this threshold you are exempt by law, but you may still opt for voluntary registration.

A few practical points not to be confused:

  • The threshold is calculated on worldwide turnover from supplies that are not exempt from the tax, not only on Swiss revenue.
  • For non-profit sports and cultural associations run on an honorary basis and for charitable institutions the threshold is higher.
  • Anyone who exceeds the threshold must register voluntarily with the Federal Tax Administration (FTA): no letter arrives to remind you.

Liability generally begins from the start of the activity if you already expect to exceed the threshold, or from the following year if you cross it during operations.

The rates in force

Since 1 January 2024 the Swiss VAT rates have been raised to finance the AHV (state pension). Three rates apply today:

  • Standard rate: 8.1% — the general rule for most goods and services.
  • Reduced rate: 2.6% — basic necessities such as food, medicines, books, newspapers.
  • Special accommodation rate: 3.8% — services in the hotel sector, overnight stays with breakfast.

Compared with the EU market, Swiss rates remain among the lowest in Europe, but this does not make management any easier: correctly attributing a transaction to the right rate is one of the most frequent sources of error in audits.

Voluntary registration: when it is worthwhile

Staying below CHF 100,000 does not automatically mean that exemption is the best choice. Voluntary registration is worthwhile above all when:

  • You make significant initial investments and want to recover the input tax paid on purchases.
  • Your clients are themselves VAT-registered businesses, so the VAT you charge is not a cost but a mere pass-through.
  • You want to avoid the micro-business image that the absence of a VAT number can convey in certain B2B sectors.

Conversely, if you sell mainly to private final consumers, the VAT charged increases the final price with no advantage: here exemption often remains preferable.

Reporting: effective method or net tax rates

Once registered, you have to choose how to report. The effective method requires you to calculate the tax due on sales and deduct the input tax on purchases, with quarterly reporting. The net tax rate method simplifies the calculation by applying a flat rate to gross turnover, with half-yearly reporting; it is designed for SMEs below certain turnover and tax limits.

The choice is not neutral: the net tax rate method reduces the administrative burden but can turn out more expensive if you have many upstream purchases with recoverable VAT. It should be assessed case by case on your real figures.

The mistakes that cost the most

In VAT audits the recurring findings are always the same:

  • Unreported crossing of the threshold: invoicing continues without VAT even after passing CHF 100,000, with retroactive recovery of the tax charged to you.
  • Wrong rate on mixed supplies (for example catering vs. restaurant service).
  • Deduction of input tax on undocumented or partly private expenses.
  • Incorrect treatment of cross-border supplies and imports of services.

None of these errors is dramatic if caught in time; all become costly if they emerge years later with default interest.
