Comparing cantonal profit tax rates

SIH ONE — Desk Fiscale · 25 September 2025

In Switzerland the profit tax on a company is not a single figure: it is made up of three overlapping levels — federal, cantonal and communal — and changes significantly depending on where the company is based. It is one of the reasons why the choice of canton (and even of municipality) is a strategic decision, not an administrative detail. But comparing tax rates requires method: a headline promising “the most convenient canton” often oversimplifies.

The three levels of profit tax

The overall burden on a GmbH or an AG arises from the sum of:

  • Direct federal tax (DFT): the same throughout Switzerland, with a rate of 8.5% on profit net of taxes.
  • Cantonal tax: set by each canton, highly variable.
  • Communal tax: calculated as a rule as a multiplier of the basic cantonal tax, and therefore different from municipality to municipality.

When you read an “effective” rate of 12%, 14% or 19%, this means the sum of these three levels, calculated on a value that takes into account the deductibility of the taxes themselves.

Why the differences are wide

After the tax reform that came into force in 2020, many cantons lowered their rates to remain competitive at the international level. The result is a fairly wide range: the most aggressive cantons sit at around 11–13% of overall effective burden, while those traditionally more expensive can exceed 19–21%. Central Switzerland (Zug, Lucerne, Nidwalden, Schwyz) and some cantons such as Appenzell and Glarus have historically been among the lightest; the large urban centres tend to weigh more.

In Ticino the overall burden sits in an intermediate band, with a path of reductions in recent years. But the specific figure must always be verified for the current year and for the specific municipality, because the communal multipliers are updated periodically.

Beware of comparing only on the rate

Looking solely at the percentage on profit is a common mistake. A serious comparison also considers:

  • Capital tax: some cantons apply it in a more or less burdensome way and sometimes offset it against profit tax.
  • Preferential regimes such as the patent box and deductions for research and development, which reduce the taxable base for certain activities.
  • Taxation of the shareholder: if you plan to distribute dividends, the burden on the individual (income tax, wealth tax) also varies by canton and can overturn the ranking.
  • Substance and operational reality: moving the registered office to a light-tax canton without real activity there is fragile. An effective presence is needed, otherwise the taxation can be challenged.

The international picture

Bear in mind the context of the 15% global minimum tax for large multinational groups (turnover threshold of 750 million euros). For the vast majority of Swiss SMEs this rule does not apply, and low-tax cantons remain fully competitive. For groups that exceed the threshold, however, the advantages of a very low rate are partly neutralised by a top-up tax.

How to reason about the choice

  • Start from your real business model: where your clients, employees, suppliers and properties are.
  • Add up the three levels of tax for the specific municipality, not for the canton in the abstract.
  • Consider the whole chain: company plus shareholder, not just the company.
  • Assess the special regimes if you have research, development or patent activities.
  • Do not chase the decimal: stability and substance matter more than a percentage point.

In summary

  • Profit tax adds up the federal level (8.5%), the cantonal and the communal.
  • The overall effective burden in Switzerland varies from roughly 11–12% to over 20%.
  • The rate alone is not enough: look at capital, incentives and shareholder taxation.
  • Economic substance is the condition for enjoying a light-tax canton.
