E-commerce platforms for the Swiss market

SIH ONE — Desk Technology · 30 May 2025

Selling online in Switzerland is not like selling in a single market. Three national languages, specific payment habits, the VAT question and logistics that have to account for borders. The choice of e-commerce platform must be made with these variables in mind, not by copying setups designed for other markets.

The families of platforms

Simplifying, the options fall into three categories:

  • Hosted SaaS (such as Shopify, BigCommerce): the platform manages hosting, security and updates. Fast time-to-market, predictable recurring costs, less freedom over the code.
  • Self-hosted open source (WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Magento/Adobe Commerce): total control and deep customisation, but you need a technical setup for hosting, maintenance and security.
  • Composable/headless solutions: the front-end is separated from the commerce engine, with maximum flexibility. Suited to those with complex needs and a development team.

There is no “best” in absolute terms: the choice depends on volume, catalogue complexity, internal resources and growth ambitions.

The criteria that really count in Switzerland

Payments

Here the Swiss market has its own rules. Beyond international cards and wallets, the decisive factors are:

  • TWINT, by now the de facto standard for mobile payments;
  • invoicing and buy-on-invoice solutions, still very widely used;
  • smooth handling of the CHF and, for those selling across the border too, the euro.

Check that the platform supports natively, or through reliable extensions, the methods that Swiss customers expect to find at checkout.

Multilingual

A credible shop speaks at least German, French and Italian, often plus English. It is not enough to translate the product sheets: you need localised URLs, metadata and checkout. Assess how the platform handles multilingual content natively, because redoing it later is costly.

VAT and invoicing

The tax configuration is a critical point. The platform must correctly handle Swiss VAT (standard rate of 8.1% from 2024, with reduced rates for certain goods) and distinguish sales abroad. Remember that VAT liability is triggered on exceeding the relevant turnover threshold, and that cross-border sales raise customs and import-VAT issues. Better to set everything up properly from the start than to correct it afterwards.

Shipping and logistics

Integration with the couriers used in Switzerland, realistic cost calculation, returns management and — for those selling abroad — customs documentation. Logistics that are transparent at checkout reduce cart abandonment.

SaaS or open source: how to decide

A few questions guide the choice:

  1. What team do you have? Without internal technical resources, a managed SaaS reduces risks and surprises.
  2. How distinctive is your model? Standard catalogues live well on SaaS; complex B2B logic, customised price lists or ERP integrations push towards open source or composable.
  3. What margins do you have? The percentage fees of SaaS weigh more heavily on high volumes; at scale, self-hosted can prove more efficient.
  4. Where do you want to be in three years? Better to choose a platform that can support growth, not just the launch.

Not just the platform

The shop is one piece of a wider system. Before choosing, consider integration with:

  • accounting and management software, so as not to re-enter the data by hand;
  • ERP/warehouse, if you manage significant stock;
  • marketing and CRM tools;
  • any marketplaces and multichannel channels.

A platform that integrates well with these systems is worth more than one rich in features but isolated.

How we set up the project

We help companies choose and configure the platform starting from the numbers: expected volumes, catalogue, target markets, internal resources. We look after the tax setup (VAT, cross-border sales) and the integration with accounting and management software, so that the e-commerce is born already connected to the rest of the business.

Informative, orientation content; technical choices must be calibrated to the specific case.
